What’s so bad about Puritanism? What’s so good about evangelicalism? What goes wrong when we no longer know how to relate the Law to the Gospel, and what effects does this have on social decay?
If evangelicals have believed they were being good Protestants by emphasising the Gospel at the expense of the Law, they have probably not read Luther’s warnings about the kind of society that would result from a repudiation of God’s Law (45). Boot highlights these, noting that many of the tyrants of secular modernity share a rejection of Biblical Law, including Adolf Hitler, who claimed to be fighting against the tyranny of ‘the so-called Ten Commandments’ (46-47).
